about my featured short story ~

Ten-year-old Terrence has grown up in a family-run inn at the crossroads of adventure, caught between tale-telling travelers and the daily hum-drummities of wiping tables and serving soup.

He’s thrilled when his fifteen-year-old brother, Cayden, returns after months of adventuring in far-off mountains. But Cayden arrives on their mother’s birthday—and he brings a dragon scale as his present.

Suddenly, Terrence’s own birthday present feels woefully inadequate. But he can’t disappoint Mum—not on her birthday. The solution? Find a gift of his own that will prove he’s just as heroic as his big brother.

Hey! I'm Karissa.

I'm the author of At the Crossroads of Adventure, a big sister, and a lover of trees.

I wrote this story to explore a quintessential fantasy world from the perspective of someone small. In a world full of dragons and swords, are things like flowers and soup still important?

What does it really mean to be a hero, anyway?
